120 million smartphones per year

After an expansion of the site in Noida, India, the world’s largest smartphone factory in northern India will now be built. Thus, India is becoming an more and more important location for smartphone production. The factory is expected to employ around 70,000 people for the production of 120 million smartphones.

Samsung previously produced smartphones in the industrial city of Noida (New Okhla Industrial Development Authority), which were manufactured specifically for the Indian market. The expansion of 140,000 square meters of additional production space is to enable an expanded production from 67 to 120 million more smartphones. 6.08 million euros were invested in the expansion. Other produced goods include refrigerators and flat screen televisions.

The factory was inaugurated earlier this week by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and South Korean President Moon Jae-in, who is currently visiting India. In 1996, the first of two Indian factories was opened in Noida, followed by the factory responsible for the production of televisions in 1997. The production of mobile phones began in 2005.

India is one of the most important markets for Samsung and other smartphone manufacturers. About 10 percent of global smartphone sales are made in India. The number of smartphone users is expected to increase from 300 million in 2017 to 340 million in 2018. Over the next four years, it is estimated that the number will increase to 440 million.
